The Third Time isn’t Always a Charm

There are rumors that some Republicans are considering renaming the White House… “the Bush House” if Jeb Bush wins in 2016.

America has always had a fascination with political dynasties. Like it or not this fascination goes all the way back to the founding of our country. The first family that can lay claim to being a political dynasty in America is not the Bush family or the Clinton’s.  It wasn’t even the Kennedy’s. It was actually the Adams Family.  John Adams was one of America’s Founding Fathers.  He was a signer of the Declaration of Independence. He was our first Vice President under George Washington and our second President. He served two terms as Vice President and one term as President between 1797 and 1801, but John Adams was not the only prominent member of the Adams family to be active in politics. His brother Samuel Adams a member of the First, and the Second Continental Congress.

Samuel Adams was one of the principal leaders of the Boston Tea Party. Just like his brother John he was also one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence. Samuel Adams became a member of the Massachusetts State Convention which ratified the United States Constitution in 1788 and later went on to become Governor of  the State of Massachusetts.

John Adam’s eldest son was John Quincy Adams who became America’s sixth President. He served a single term between 1825 and 1829. The Adams family was America’s first family to have both father and son Presidents. They left an indelible imprint on American history. The Adams family was America’s first political dynasty.

The next family to ascend to the pinnacle of American politics was the Harrison family. Benjamin Harrison was a delegate to the Continental Congress from the state of Virginia in 1774. Like John and Samuel Adams he was also one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence. Benjamin Harrison’s son was William Henry Harrison. He became our Nation’s 9th President in 1841. William Henry Harrison is noted for having the shortest Presidential term in U.S. history. He served only thirty days in office before he succumbed to pneumonia in 1841. William Henry’s grandson was also named Benjamin Harrison just like his famous great grandfather. The later Benjamin Harrison became our country’s 23rd President. He completed one term in office between 1889 and 1893. Benjamin Harrison was succeeded by Grover Cleveland who just happened to be the same President who preceded him in office.

Franklin Roosevelt 2

Franklin Roosevelt

The next political dynasty to arrive on the American scene was the Roosevelt family. Theodore (aka Teddy) and Franklin both served as United States Presidents. The Roosevelts were cousins. Franklin was a Democrat and Teddy (the elder) was a Republican, but he was a Republican in name only. The fact is they were both progressives.  Teddy, the so called Republican Roosevelt later went on to found the Bull Moose Party which was the beginning of the Progressive Movement in America. He was actually the very first Republican RINO.

Next up on the American political stage  is the Kennedy clan…  They got their political start under the Democratic patronage of Franklin Delano Roosevelt. Though their experience in politics has been filled with misfortune there are still members of the Kennedy family who are active in politics today. While none of them are politically active on a national level, some of the younger members of the family are active in local politics. Joseph P. Kennedy was the father of this famous political dynasty. He was appointed by Franklin Roosevelt to be our ambassador to England in 1938…. His son John became America’s 36th President.  John appointed his younger brother Robert to serve as his Attorney General and both he and his other brother Edward later went on to become United States Senators. Robert Kennedy later went on to become a leading contender for the Democratic Presidential nomination in 1968, but his life was cut short by an assassin’s bullet just as his brother’s was.  The Kennedy Family has had more than its fair share of political success and tragedy.

The Kennedys

Meanwhile Edward Kennedy continued to serve as the senior Senator from the State of Massachusetts for the remainder of his life as well as being the principal suspect in the drowning death of Mary Joe Kopechne at Chappaquiddick.

John Kennedy’s son was John Kennedy Jr. whose life and rising political star were both suddenly cut short when he died in a tragic airplane accident along with his wife. After his death John’s younger sister Caroline was sought after to run for the Senate seat from New York that was vacated when Hillary Clinton became our Secretary of State. This was the same Senate seat that was previously held by her uncle Robert and was intended to become her brother John’s before he died in that tragic airplane crash.

A lessor known political dynasty in America but quite well known in New York is the Cuomo Family. Both father Mario and son Andrew have served two terms each as Governors of New York.

In California there is the Brown Family . Not to be outdone by New York the Brown’s have also produced father and son Governors for the Golden State.  Edmund Gerald Brown better known as Pat Brown was California’s governor between 1959 and 1967. His son Jerry Brown is the State’s current governor. He is serving his fourth term. Jerry Brown was first elected in 1976 and again in 1980. Then after many years out of the public spotlight he was re-elected Governor in 2010 and once again in 2014. That is four terms for this liberal who was once referred to as “Governor Moonbeam”.

Then there is the Romney Family which has produced one Governor of Michigan and another Governor of Massachusetts. Both father and son had presidential aspirations but like other politicians from the state of Massachusetts namely Ted Kennedy and Michael Dukakis neither of them were successful on the road to 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. However Mitt Romney may not be through trying.

Bushesthree

The Bushes

But alas there is no political dynasty in America quite like the Bush family. Its patriarch was Prescott Bush who was twice elected Senator from Connecticut. Prescott Bush was a longtime friend and political ally of Nelson Rockefeller. Maybe you have heard the term Rockefeller Republicans before. It used to be said that there were just two kinds of Republicans… Rockefeller Republicans and Reagan Republicans. The Rockefeller Republicans are the liberal kind of Republicans and Prescott Bush was definitely a Rockefeller Republican. So are all of his children and grandchildren for that matter. In addition to Prescott Bush, the Bush family has produced two governors, one from Texas and the other from Florida, one Vice President (George Herbert Walker Bush), and two United States Presidents so far, George W. Bush and George H.W. Bush also known as “Papa Bush”. They were all Rockefeller Republicans and just like Mitt Romney, the Bush Family is not done trying to get into the White House either.

The Bush family is still producing serious contenders for the top political position in America. Jeb Bush the former Governor of Florida will be running for President in 2016. There are rumors that some Republicans are considering renaming the White House… the Bush House if Jeb Bush wins in 2016. It is said that the third time is always a charm and that a bird in hand is better than two in the bush, however I think that two Bushes in the White House are enough already and a third is definitely not a charm.  But then neither were the first two for that matter. Anyone else who runs for the Republican Presidential nomination in 2016 would be a lot better in my opinion than having another Bush in the White House in 2016 and that includes Mitt Romney. But we aren’t threw with the Bushes yet because they aren’t threw trying to become President.

Three George Bushes

Three generations of George Bush… George H.W., George W., and George P.

There are still all the grandchildren of Papa Bush who will grow up and try to make their way in the political world. Jeb’s son is George P. Bush. He is already following in the footsteps of his father, and his famous grandfather, and his even more famous uncle, George W. Bush. He has just been elected to a position as the Commissioner of the Texas General Land Office so stay tuned for more about his political aspirations and about his father’s in 2016. Perhaps we will have four generations of Bush’s in the White House before it is all over… or maybe it will never be over. With all the budding Bushes waiting in the wings there may always be another Bush in our political future. It seems like we just can’t get enough of these political dynasties in America. They have been with us from the very beginning. It’s too bad that more of our nation’s First Families don’t take their cue from George Washington’s family and follow in the footsteps of our very first, First Family.
