Southern Sudan Votes for Independence - The Birth of a New Nation
Africa’s Largest Nation Breaks Under the Load!
  By Scott Rohter, February 2011
A new nation was born on February 7th, 2011 out of the chaos and bloodshed of a real actual revolution, unlike the street demonstrations going on in Cairo (dubbed a revolution only by the media)! This real revolution in Sudan has been raging on for over a decade and last month as a result of the terms of a June 20th, 2006 U.N. backed cease-fire, new elections were held and the people of Southern Sudan voted overwhelmingly for independence. And so a new nation will be carved out from the largest country in Africa. The nation of Southern Sudan was born during the several weeks that it took to count all the votes. And when it was over, the vote was nearly unanimous, over 95% in favor of separation from Arab, Muslim dominated Sudan!

This was truly the first major international event of 2011 and good news for almost 10 Million South Sudanese Christians who have been persecuted for as long as they can remember by their Muslim Arab overlords as much for their religion as for the color of their skin. How much coverage did this major event receive from the news media compared to events going in Egypt just to the north? Precious little. If no news is good news, as the saying goes, then if it makes the news, it must be bad news! And so it is for us in the West. All of the street demonstrations and the unrest going on in Cairo is probably bad news for us!

But for a moment I would like to wish all the future citizens of Southern Sudan, God speed and good luck! However, you are by no means home free, or even out of the proverbial woods yet! Your new country is rich in oil and gas deposits and it is highly unlikely that the Arab government of Khartoum will just let them go without more fighting. But at least it is a step in the right direction for now. Congratulations!
